Jeff Hall is the Founder and Director of Sumner Hall Associates, a specialist corporate advisory firm established in 2001 to provide independent advice on mergers and acquisitions, divestments, corporate restructuring and financial matters generally. A principal activity of the firm is the preparation of corporate and business valuations and providing litigation support including preparation of expert reports and giving expert testimony.

Background

Prior to founding Sumner Hall, Jeff was an Executive Director and shareholder of Grant Samuel & Associates, a boutique investment banking firm specialising in mergers and acquisitions, from 1989 to 2001. At Grant Samuel he advised on takeovers, mergers, acquisitions and divestments, initial public offerings and other capital raisings — including the preparation of independent expert and valuation reports across coal, oil and gas, mineral sands, aluminium, building materials, banking and financial services, brewing, wine, food and food services, health care, cinema, telecommunications and broadcast media.

Jeff joined Grant Samuel from a position as a Principal of Ernst & Young Corporate Advisory Services, having joined Arthur Young in Sydney in 1986 following eight years in banking and chartered accounting in Australia and the United States with Bank of America and Touche Ross.

Academic and professional recognition

Jeff was a Visiting Fellow at the Macquarie Applied Finance Centre and Principal Lecturer for the Mergers & Acquisitions Course delivered in Sydney, Melbourne, Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo as part of Macquarie University's Master of Applied Finance Degree from 1995 to 2018.

He is the author of two papers on valuation — Valuations — Practice and Procedures (1987) and The Valuation of Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets (1990) — and co-author, with Winsome Hall, of Business Valuation in the Law (Thomson Reuters, 2025).

Expert testimony

Jeff has prepared expert evidence and given expert testimony on numerous occasions in the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, the Land and Environment Court of NSW, the Land Court of Queensland, the State Administrative Tribunal of Western Australia, the Royal Courts of Justice in London, and before the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce.
